E very year at DAYSPA, we briefl y bemoan the fact that we have to plan our holiday issues during the dog days of summer, when we're still dusting the sand out of our shorts and washing the saltwater from our hair. I say "briefl y," because we soon remember that getting to sift through box after box of beautifully packaged spa retail items while making our selection is actually quite a privilege. Plus, we're often reminded that fellow media pros have it worse. Case in point: This year I received a pitch about a Valentine's Day product in mid-August! Joking aside, the truth is that it's never too early to get a jump on your seasonal retail planning. After all, any strategy that helps you get ahead, stress less and—whisper it— actually enjoy the holidays is a good thing, right? And if your employees normally balk at having to sell home care, the battle is already half won by a pretty ribbon here and fl ash of tinsel there. Before you place your holiday retail orders, take a look at our suggestions of lovely skin care, makeup, hair products, candles, jewelry and more in our "Gorgeous Goodies" feature (page 28). October also marks Breast Cancer Awareness (BCA) month, which is why this issue also pays close attention to spa clients for whom every day is a gift—cancer patients. Our "Handle With Care" feature (page 58) discusses ways in which you and your staff can fully serve this large and oft-neglected population. This month, we're reminded that gift giving comes in other forms too—Winning Ways (page 72) showcases fi ve skincare companies that give back by generously donating their time, energy and resources to helping every cause from puppies to Planet Earth. These companies—and their spa partners—get a huge thumbs-up from us. And speaking of which, remember to go online to cast your votes in our 2018 Professionals Choice Awards, and keep an eye out for reminders on social media!
