In fact, deaths from breast cancer in the U.S. declined by 42 percent from the 1987-1989 study period to the 2011-2013 study period. Latin America, however, showed divided results, with increased breast cancer-related mortality rates in Brazil and Colombia, and decreased rates in Argentina and Chile. South Korea experienced the largest increase in this category, possibly due to its relatively recent shift from an agricultural, developing country into a highly Westernized one, with all of the associated environmental, dietary and industrial exposures that have been linked to the disease. Globally (including in the U.S.), rates declined the most for women under 50. The study's lead author, Cecile Pizor, MSc, of the International Prevention Research Institute in Lyon, France, speculates that this could be because younger women often receive more intense treatments, such as longer chemotherapy courses, which prolong their survival. Interestingly, there was no clear evidence as to what role breast cancer screening plays in these mortality trends. For the study, researchers analyzed information on breast cancer deaths from the World Health Organization database. To learn more, visit sabcs.org.
