[ 12 ] • # dayspamagazine • december 2017 T E A M T R A V E L S from the editor by Lesley McCave For more coverage of ISPA, as well as the Global Wellness Summit, go to pages 63 and 64. I 'm writing this shortly after returning from the ISPA Conference & Expo, which was held in Las Vegas just two weeks after the tragedy at the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino. Event speakers and exhibitors alike—not to mention hotel, transportation and other tourism employees—rose to the occasion by off ering attendees a very warm welcome. For those three days, we all sought solace in familiar faces and soaked up keynote speeches like a sponge, seeking (and fi nding) inspiration. Morale received a huge boost when Colin Mcilheney of PricewaterhouseCoopers announced the latest promising spa industry fi gures, aka the Big 5, while pioneers such as ESPA's Sue Harmsworth, who received the ISPA Visionary Award, reminded the audience that the world at large needs spa services now more than ever. Away from the crowds, a dedicated wellness area provided respite by way of mini treatments and experiences, including a delightful Earl Grey tea ceremony hosted by SpaRitual. I fl ew back from the show reinvigorated and motivated, and determined to make my own home a soothing haven from the often overwhelming outside world. That sentiment extends to this, our annual design issue, whose features provide plenty of practical advice and tips on how to maintain your spa as a serene mind-body retreat all year round. Whether you simply want to reupholster the chairs in your relaxation lounge or have notions of converting your facility into a snazzy new neighborhood hub, "Echoes in Design" (page 26) and "Design on a Dime" (page 44) are must-reads. And don't shy away from small details: A shelf of self-help books here or a plant there can do wonders to transform a room's energy. In short, don't underestimate the healing power of design in these trying times. u I was treated to a cut, color and curls at Bomane in Beverly Hills, California Laura met Jane Iredale's director of education, Tricia Behmardi (right), at ISPA Sarah helped OPI scoop the Guinness World Record for the longest manicure bar, in Santa Monica, California A cute "zen corner" for staff at Ciel Spa by Pearl Wellness at SLS Beverly Hills in California M O R E O N T H E W E B Designed to Do Good
