H E A L I N G N E W S There's emerging scientifi c evidence to support the saying "Breakfast is the most important meal of the day." According to research published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology , eating a healthy breakfast promotes greater heart health, including healthier weight and cholesterol. Specifi cally, missing breakfast is associated with an increased risk of atherosclerosis, or the hardening and narrowing of arteries from plaque buildup. Researchers in Madrid enlisted 4,052 volunteers and split them into three groups: those who skipped breakfast and only had a beverage, breakfast consumers, and low-energy breakfast consumers (those who had a smaller breakfast). Atherosclerosis was observed more often in participants who didn't eat breakfast and was also higher in low-energy breakfast consumers than breakfast consumers. "Aside from the direct association with cardiovascular risk factors, skipping breakfast might serve as a marker for a general unhealthy diet or lifestyle, which in turn is associated with the development of atherosclerosis," says senior author Jose L. Peñalvo, PhD, assistant professor at the Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy at Tufts University in Medford, Massachusetts. "Between 20 and 30 percent of adults don't eat breakfast, and these trends mirror the increasing prevalence of obesity and associated cardiometabolic abnormalities," adds Prakash Deedwania, MD, professor of medicine at the University of California, San Francisco. SLIM CHANCE In an eff ort to help curb the ongoing obesity crisis in the U.S., cognitive- based lifestyle management provider SelfHelpWorks has developed LivingLean, an online video course aimed at creating lasting behavioral change in regard to weight loss. It can be accessed from any computer, tablet or smartphone, and is designed as a personalized experience that helps participants think diff erently about food and implement a process to end the cravings that often lead to obesity. "We've designed LivingLean to attack the root of the problem: false beliefs and self- defeating thought patterns that take place at a subconscious level," says company founder Lou Ryan.
