SPOTLIGHT ON... to local papers, and posters to hang in key areas of the spa such as the bathroom, retail area and lounge. We are also pushing it via social media sites: Facebook, Twitter and Google+. Aranda: Because I'm a mobile spa, social media sites and text messaging best spread the word. I also find that good old-fashioned word-of-mouth is really beneficial for my business. When one woman loves a treatment or service, she will most likely tell her friends about it. Lee: Once a month, our spa hosts a Happy Hour event and invites the local community. We'll have a DJ, wine and hors d'oeuvres. We've used this event to promote our Valentine's Day promotions by raffling off a service and offering a discount if they book that night. We were lucky enough to have last year's Valentine's Day treatments featured on TV's The Ellen Show and The Doctors. That gave us great exposure, and people still call us about that, curious to find out about this year's special services, too. Have you ever had a V-Day promotion or event that didn't fare as well as expected? Aranda: One year I ran a Superbowl-themed promotion and marketed it as a 'treat for Dad or significant other.' The market for male clients has grown significantly over the years and I wanted to make an effort to chase that trend. However, I didn't get the response I wanted and the promotion really didn't fly. I've found that single women are much more responsive to my promotions, so I'm sticking to what works. What is your strategy to ensure V-Day clients return? Bray: All of our contest participants are required to submit their email addresses, which we add to our client database. Once we choose a winner, we follow up with everyone who entered, and email them a discount offer good for any of our spa's services. Lee: We typically offer special discounts and perks for clients who rebook within 30 days of the treatment. We also have them fill out intake forms and disclose their birthdays so we can send a brief email and invite them to come by for a little b-day pampering. We recently unveiled a new menu, so that has been a great way to encourage clients to come back and try a newly added service.
