he spa industry's roots are deeply seeded in botanical ingredients, considered a staple in many products, as well as the backbone of the spa industry. And now that the demand for nature-based ingredients has hit an alltime high, today's discriminating skincare consumers are scouring product labels in search of the latest new formula that's rich in natural ingredients, yet delivers the results of advanced product technologies. But is there really anything "new" about botanicals? "It is hard to talk about trends in botanicals, because they have been used for centuries in skin and body care and have so many uses across cultures," points out Alexis Mayne, director of brand development, Sanítas Skincare. "So I think any trends we see reflect consumer knowledge about certain plants or systems, like ayurveda." Ultimately, it comes down to how Mother Nature's bounty is used. "Modern skin care balances the strong corrective components with the gentle repair components," reminds Gül Zone, president, founder and biochemist at DermAware Bio-Targeted Skin Care. "Nature provides a wonderful bouquet of choices in this arena, and science allows us to use the best of nature in high, effective doses in correct delivery systems to provide balanced results." We asked leading product formulators like Mayne and Zone to tell us about the signature ingredients in their top-selling botanical skincare SKUs.
