Grains of Truth In this exciting age of chemical exfoliating technology, the humble physical scrub is still a must. But while such classic client favorites present a homecare hole-in-one, their typical ingredients run the gamut. Behold, DAYSPAs guide to the most effective facial sloughing agents, according to skin density. Dont get us wrongwe love a good facial resurfacing of the enzymatic, lactic or glycolic varieties. Yet theres something so simply satisfying about manually polishing dead surface cells away. And we arent alone in this sentimentmen, older clients and spa newbies tend to appreciate the aromatic appeal and get-er-done smoothing sensation inherent to the physical facial scrub experience. Plus, retailing yummy scrub potionswhich apply abrasive action to slough dead cells away via frictionoffers clients an enjoyable way to maintain soft, supple results in between facial services. Physical exfoliation is a simple, reliable and versatile spa staple. Eva Kerschbaumer, seasoned esthetician and co-owner of EsSpa Kozmetika Organic Skincare in Pittsburgh, has used it to elevate her facial services to a more interactive and organic level by customizing homemade scrubs to incorporate into individual protocols. Fruit-based scrubs make for a great guest experience, as theyre soothing, familiar and fantastic-smelling, notes Kerschbaumer, who has been known to mix such unorthodox ingredients as poppy seeds, apple paste, honeycomb and yogurt powder into innovative fusion scrubs. Naturally, delicate mature skin cant handle the same abrasive agents that most effectively smooth mens relatively thick dermis. So, whether treating a client in your spa, or sending her home with product, its crucial to determine the right strategy for each individual. To polish up on the best ingredients for various skin types, DAYSPA checked in with some knowledgeable skincare therapists. Weve also compiled a partial listing of manufacturers offering tantalizing old-fashioned scrubs (see Slough it Out, below). Simply turn the page to nd out what types of ingredients will best benet your clients, and then check to see which suppliers can help you out. Heres to smooth sailing ahead!
