EDITOR'S PAGE Shared Roots I 've always been a city person, at my happiest power-walking up a busy street, brandishing a bulging shopping bag in one hand and a to-go coffee in the other, getting through my errands in the comforting company of several million fellow diehard urbanites. It isn't surprising: As a kid growing up in New York, my most memorable experience with nature consisted of pushing a lima bean into a little plastic cup of dirt handed to me by my second grade teacher at P.S. 30. Still, I like to think that my reverence for Mother Nature is as deeply rooted as anyone else's. Caring about the earth's wonders is an innately human thing, like rescuing a puppy or shielding an infant's head—it's life protecting life. And it's certainly an honored tenet of the spa industry, whose roots are firmly planted in our most precious natural resources. For this Earth Month issue, we started with the very core of the spa tradition: water. "Marine Layer" (page 50) features six especially popular spa treatment protocols based on ingredients derived from the sea. Linda Kossoff Executive Editor conscious spa manufacturers to tell us how they're "walking the talk," ensuring that their internal business operations are as green as their nature-based products. And we didn't stop there. Throughout this issue of DAYSPA, you'll find unique revelations that confirm our industry's undeniable devotion to planet Earth, from a day spa in New Jersey that has partnered with a waste management mogul to support a community beauty product recycling effort ("Paint the Town Green", page 62) to the burgeoning trend of using apitherapy—bee venom-based treatments—in facials ("What's the Buzz?", page 16). Looking to apply more earth-friendly practices to your business? Check out this issue's Green Scene column, "Animal Tracking" (page 82), to help you ensure that the products you buy and sell are truly "cruelty-free." And make sure to visit dayspamagazine.com to read this month's web exclusive on green retailing practices, to help you sharpen your green buying and selling acumen. No matter where we are on the environmental commitment scale—whether our businesses were green from the word "go," or are just starting to incorporate earth-friendly practices, and whether we grew up on a farm in the country's heartland or in the heart of a metropolitan center—there's no denying our shared roots, nor their original source.
