SPOTLIGHT ON... Acne Treatment Pros share how they heal and clear clients' acneic skin. What's the most effective way to treat acne in the spa? Marc Edward, owner of Marc Edward Skincare in West Hollywood, California: I offer a specialized and customized acne treatment [$250 single treatment; $600 for a series of 6] that involves sonic cleansing, acid exfoliation, extractions, wet microdermabrasion, ultrasound and LED light therapy. The root of acne is often poor exfoliation. A pore is large enough to hold a grain of rice—that's a lot of bacteria. And at-home, mechanical scrubs irritate and spread this bacteria. Chemical exfoliants, however, go in and unplug the locked doors of these follicles, help bad things to come out, and improve cell turnover. And if clients have acne scars, the best thing is vitamin A, chemical peels, microderm and specialized LED therapy. If clients have been using harsh acne treat- ments such as sulphur and benzoyl peroxide—which are powerful antibacterials—their skin tends to be very dry and irritating, and often requires oxygen infusion and hydrating masks.
