MODES OF MOISTURIZING oftentimes, a cream with a higher oil content is necessary to restore the skin's barrier and allow stressed skin to maintain its moisture content. Zone: Light layers of hydrating serums that infuse actives are the best approach for medicated, hormonal and even oncology clients. Otherwise, clients are likely to pile on cream that just sits on the surface and doesn't help what's going on underneath. CLIENT PROFILE Karen, a 52-year-old Chicagoan, had never experienced serious skin problems until two months ago, when her doctors put her on cholesterol-lowering medication. Unfortunately, her usual moisturizers are now no longer cutting it. Campbell: Karen's skin conditions may include flushing, erythema multiforme and/or toxic epidermal necrolysis. These conditions can cause redness as well as rashes/blisters. Professional treatments should not use steam or heat, which could aggravate the redness. Homecare products should be hydration-infused as well as anti-inflammatory and antibacterial. 74 DAYSPA | FEBRUARY 2013 Asquith: Karen will need to add a hydrating concentrate to her homecare regimen, to be used morning and evening, prior to cream application. Her cream should also be re-evaluated— Allison: Karen's skin changes may be more of an issue of her age and Chicago's climate. She would benefit from the support of a renewing retinaldehyde serum along with a potent complex with high humectant properties, such as hyaluronic acid. Layering light cream over her serums will give her a moistened, dewy feel. Katie O'Reilly is DAYSPA's managing editor. Common side effects of cholesterol meds include dehydration and sensitivity to the sun, so Karen needs to drink lots of water and use a good sunscreen. She should moisturize her body with shea butter, and for the face, seek ingredients like peptides, sodium hyaluronate, vitamins C and E, green tea extract, jojoba oil and aloe vera. Zangl: Karen might also try an eye serum containing different-sized hyaluronic acid molecules to replenish the eye moisture barrier. Unlike the skin on the rest of the face, the eye area does not contain oil glands that can keep this skin moist.
