The ManyModes of Moisturizing Dehydrated skin stems from infinite causes and takes various forms. Help every type of client achieve healthy, hydrated complexions. By Katie O'Reilly On a grand scale, all skin might be created equal, but when it comes to actual client variables—age, region, stress level, hormones, lifestyle and health—spa pros are left tending to skincare issues as diverse as the topical solutions designed to address them. Dehydration may be the woe most frequently and drastically afflicting clients' complexions, but treating all parched skin cells alike—or expecting them to benefit from the same ingredients— would be a vital mistake. So, DAYSPA presented 12 principals and esthetic educators from major skincare manufacturing companies (see Our Panel, below) with six unique client prototypes, and they advised us on how to hydrate and improve the skin of each of these hypothetical, yet common, spa guests. Our panel experts agreed that any good moisturizing strategy should target inflammation, strengthen skin's protective barrier, provide antioxidant action and offer nourishment to help skin cells renew. Yet, their prescriptions for each of our "clients"—from the dry skin-besieged 60-year old to the breastfeeding 30-something to the acneic teen—called for drastically varied treatment, home care and lifestyle advice. Turn the page to meet our clients— chances are, they'll remind you of some of your own—and find out how to become a skincare savior for each.
